Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacteria that is resistant to many antibiotics. In the general community, MRSA most often causes skin infections and in some cases, it causes pneumonia (lung infection) and other health issues. If left untreated, MRSA infections can become severe and cause sepsis – a life-threatening reaction to severe infection in the body. When MRSA bacteria infects people who have not been hospitalized nor had a medical procedure within the last year, it is called CA-MRSA (community-acquired MRSA). This dangerous epidemic has invaded communities worldwide, attacking the healthy without warning and causing disease and death. 

Despite the increasing frequency of devastating MRSA and CA-MRSA infections, the pharmaceutical industry, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has inadequately addressed the epidemic.  While  advocacy groups have formed to respond to the MRSA epidemic, there remains an urgent need for research programs dedicated to therapeutic initiatives.

This is why the family of Sam Kader, a tragic CA-MRSA victim, launched The Sam Kader Memorial Fund to defeat MRSA through research and advocacy. The Fund is spearheaded by the Kader family to finance research on the prevention and cure of MRSA and CA-MRSA infections and promote public education by sponsoring scientific meetings, symposia and workshops.
