ABOUT MRSA

"MRSA is the silent killer of the twenty-first century.”

- Salwa Kader, the mother of Sam Kader

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is a potential pandemic; one our scientists, healthcare professionals, pharmaceutical companies, government, and community at large are profoundly ill equipped to combat. Little progress has been made in fighting both the hospital and community acquired form of the infection, and only a handful of effective medications are currently available to combat MRSA. What is particularly troubling is that health officials around the world have seen a steady rise in bacterial infections that no longer respond to routine antibiotics. With antibiotic resistance emerging faster than new drugs can be developed, the World Health Organization (WHO) has called for urgent action to combat the problem.

Despite the daunting statistic that MRSA will claim more lives in the US this year than either AIDS or breast cancer, most Americans have never even heard of it. The public’s lack of awareness and education on the topic is staggering considering that unlike AIDS, MRSA threatens the lives of every single citizen. In contrast to AIDS (transmitted only through IV drug use, contaminated blood transfusion or sexual contact), MRSA can be contracted through skin-to-skin contact.
